Uh oh

A reader was kind enough to forward to us some new documents in Doc's bankruptcy case. We haven't had a lot of time yet to digest their full meaning, but after a cursory look it appears there is an active investigation into Doc's recent filing. We're particularly intrigued by this comment from the Chapter 7 court trustee:
On August 21, 2008, a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Petition was filed. On August 22, 2008, I was appointed Chapter 7 Trustee. The Section 341 meeting was conducted on September 19, 2008. At this time, I am awaiting certain financial documents for the purpose of investigating the possibility of recovery of assets in this case for the benefit of creditors. [Our emphasis]
"Recovery of assets"? As in, the ones that were not listed in his original filing (e.g. sailboats, metal detectors, coins (stolen or otherwise), diving gear)? We assume so. Normally bankruptcy filings are cut and dry affairs. But something is astir here, we're fairly certain.

Normally, decent people never wish hardships on a fellow human being, but in McManus's case, it's difficult not to desire ill will on the man. First of all, there's no doubt Doc (and his cretinous fellow creatures at HHI) would love to succeed in his mission to destroy Odyssey. He has absolutely zero regard for how this outcome would affect countless living, breathing people, including Odyssey's employees, their families, investors and fans of what the company is doing.

So when it comes to Dear old Doc, we think he's getting exactly what his karma dictates. And we think the unpleasantness level for him just ratcheted up a notch.

Stay tuned for more....

Pot & Kettle

Well, the histrionic gnashing of teeth about Odyssey's latest court filing over its Black Swan discovery is well underway over at HHI.

Doc's complained, without one ounce of irony or shame, about the "poor writing" of the filing (read this gem for an idea of his ability), and Solomon bashed, and possibly defamed, the two archaeologists who offered expert testimony about the find. The Angry Twit went so far as to essentially accuse the archaeologists of committing illegality (lying under oath) to specifically benefit Odyssey:
Odyssey employs a couple of guys who say that they see nothing, just some "objects". (Exactly what Odyssey needs them to say. Is anyone surprised?) Take away the vested interests and who would you believe?
Doc, doing what Minor Twits do, followed up Bartram by alleging one of the archaeologists lied about his undergraduate degree while purchasing his master degree from an online "university" (which are his quotes, undoubtedly to suggest it wasn't an actual academic institution). Gosh, you fellas sure better have your facts right, because if you're not 100 percent correct about your smears, and if we were these two professionals (one of whom we believe is a Brit), we'd sue you personally and HHI's collective ass for defamation.

But to the point, and this is where it gets truly interesting, there's plenty of evidence that John Bartram has in the past peddled himself and services-for-hire as both an archaeologist and historian. Yet, he's never produced any credentials to justify these self-appointed professional titles, he clearly doesn't refer to himself as an "amateur," nor has he ever provided any specific project details about the field work he's claimed to have done "all over the world."

[For the record, Bartram has also been publicly called out before by others for these false claims, and we've also written about his lack of credentials and questionable past before, here and here. Bartram was identified in a recent New Yorker profile of Odyssey as a "former television producer," but there was no mention of Bartram's involvement in either of the two professional fields he claims to have "worldwide experience" in.]

There's even a tell-tale photo and caption taken from an old HHI website -- which, not surprisingly offered several services in these fields -- that clearly shows Bartram referring to himself as an archaeologist and historian:

So, obviously, who the hell is John Bartram to question the credentials of two practicing archaeologists providing expert testimony? He has repeatedly failed and/or declined to produce one single credential or project summery in archaeology or history to justify these self-appointed titles in two very distinct academic fields.

Today he arrogantly mocked one archaeologist for having a "piece of paper from an online institution" (of course, Bartram fails to explain or provide details about this, yet more potential defamation). We'd remind the Angry Twit that even a single piece of paper from any organization would be more than he's ever produced to justify his use of these professional titles.

Mr. Pot, meet Mr. Kettle.

The HHI founders' hypocrisy is so thick with stench you need a mask and massive shovel to manage it all. We'll keep doing the dirty work, though, because someone has to.

Douchebaggery on Parade

It's been a while since we posted, but, as usual, the unfathomable depths of Solomon's arrogant puffery and his personal delusions of grandeur awoke us from our current relaxed state of ambivalence about all things HHI. (We mean, c'mon! One of their founders just publicly, badly disgraced himself...again! How much attention do these guys deserve?).

If you haven't yet, be sure to check out Bartram's insanely disjointed, highly nonacademic thread called "The American Phenomenon of Treasure Hunting" over on the HHI website. Besides being poorly written and argued, it's more conspiratorial than the JFK-assassination and Fake Moon Landing weirdos combined (e.g. he puts heavy emphasis and offers lots of nonsensical non sequiturs about Mormons and Freemasons).

One can almost envision the Master Twit penning this drivel -- sun about to rise, him furiously kneading overgrown brows, dramatically stroking that empty bald noggin, quaffing copious amounts of sherry. This latest installment encapsulates some of his hair-brained notions, while displaying his grandiose sense of self-importance. It's particularly entertaining that he sees himself as an unappreciated victim of the "enemies of truth." Of course, the "truth" is something only he offers up to an ungrateful world of idiots and frauds...in other words, anyone who dares disagree with his Sageness (Bartram really is a cantankerous, bitter douchebag). Hilarious.

Check it out:
'Occult and esoteric involvement has often been downplayed by the Craft and relegated to a category of activity referred to as “Fringe Masonry”, in which the participants are painted as either charlatans or as slightly delusional. This is of course a response to the use of this historical data by those promoting an anti-Masonic agenda. The truth is that the interest of these Freemasons in the occult needs to be considered in a purely historical context.'

The denials, the misrepresentations, are all to be expected in defence of the Masonic cause, right? That is also what I was told to expect when I asked about their fraudulent activities. That is what I got and I wasn't attacking the 'Craft', but asking politely on a matter of history.

It was the nature of my enquiry that frightened. That is, those of whom I enquired were gutless. Morally worthless. Great people, just the sort you want in positions of authority - not. I needn't make an attack - any damage has been and is being done by themselves.

Perhaps one day somebody will have the rectitude to make a truthful account, or perhaps I will just have to continue dragging it out of them. The web is worldwide - everyone has a voice. The silence has spoken volumes on this generation already. ~Solomon

P.S. I once sat on a corporate Board and found I was the only non-Freemason; none could be bothered and one by one I had to fire them all - they thought they were due payment for just being there. I was and am unimpressed.
There you have it. The full douchebaggery known as HHI's "Solomon" -- archaeologist and historian of great stature ... for us to poop on!

Oh what we wouldn't give to see Bartram's royal wrath at such pedestrian criticism of his life's work! We fully expect red-faced rage and an Irish whiskey-soaked spittle outburst at the nerve of the illiteratti!

We bet that infamous horsewhip gets a strenuous workout too.

Fake Experts

There's been a hilarious outburst of delusion over at the history hunters' website. The poseurs are loudly touting projects "all over the world," but, as usual, only two are listed in any kind of detail, and even that is as thin as Bartram's Rocky Top noggin. To be fair, one seems a fairly legitimate exercise with somewhat interesting results; the other is a spurious claim of a mysterious Spanish shipwreck that some have alleged is an old, well-known (i.e. picked over and useless) shipwreck that Doc stole credit for finding.

[Note to HHI: We're not sure using the pathetic efforts of a bankrupt-filing libeling loser goes far in promoting your organizational legitimacy; but hey: whoever said you guys were bright or had good judgment?]

Believe it or not, the poseurs also actually try to take credit for the entering into force of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. And without one measly shred of evidence, or a specific example to back it up, the losers actually haughtily proclaim: "We continue to advise and assist governments and their institutions in these endeavours. We also advise the media, providing background briefings on the various issues."

Um, we seriously doubt it.

Co-founder John Bartram likes to tell people he's an archaeologist and historian by training (he's neither), and Doc and the "Satdiver" idiot ("smithvi2003" over on Yahoo) claim they're accomplished underwater shipwreck explorers. In fact, no credentials, no specific projects, no accomplishments, have ever been provided. They just want you to take their word for it. And, as we've documented before, they're also peddling services that are in direct competition to the people they vociferously (and disingenuously) attack.

But, to paraphrase the great Lily Tomlin, delusions of grandeur are necessary for some people: it helps them feel better about themselves.

One other note: Doc's bankruptcy hearing is now November 21st. We've received numerous reports from readers of possibly hidden assets -- a Federal crime -- and we know for a fact that his creditors have been directly contacted about certain details. We hope if you have information that might help "clarify" McManus's moral failure, you'll contact the appropriate authorities.

Finally, if any of our readers in the Virgin Islands would like to attend the hearing and report back, we'd love to file to file your report.

And now, a public service announcement...

It's obvious from our comments section, and from emails we've received, that some out there appear to possess compelling information related to Doc's recent bankruptcy filing. A new filing now lists a major creditor involved in the filing, American Express (whom he owes close to $60,000). We don't know what you have, but if your information is truly contradictory to his filing, we're certain these folks would be interested in learning of it. Hey, consider it your civic duty to the rest of us responsible taxpayers who get punished by deadbeats like Doc!

He's smarter than he looks...

We see that a certain Spanish reporter -- the Geraldo Rivera of Europe (and that's deeply insulting to Rivera, actually) -- has returned to his goofy conspiracy mongering over on Yahoo. Interestingly, he also decided to layout his wild, completely speculative "theories" about Odyssey activities on the HHI website as well. Of course, like the little yappy lap dog that he is, Doc immediately jumped into the fray, dropping not so subtle hints about other supposed nefarious activities of Odyssey Marine, including the company "looting" shipwreck sites during their search for the HMS Sussex, and storing Black Swan artifacts in Tangier.

(We know, you can't make this stuff up.)

Of interest, though, Solomon immediately deleted Doc's likely libelous response and warned this reporter not to make "criminal allegations" against Odyssey because HHI abides by English law (where libel and defamation judgements are far easier to receive than the U.S.). Smart move, sure. But we find it interesting that he failed to take down the reporter's piece, the very thing that accuses Odyssey of committing crimes in Europe.

We won't bother with a detailed explanation of this reporter's outlandish theories, but suffice to say they involve Odyssey operating in coordination with the UK's Ministry of Defense to use submarines for illegal activities. James Bond stuff, for sure, except their offered up by a drooling madman who wouldn't recognize good reporting if Walter Conkrite personally stuck his foot in his ass.

Poor Doc, he just can't catch a break. Already shunned and laughed at by his HHI brethren, he also just pathetically posted an update on his supposed Spanish shipwreck project (which has been mocked by some in our comments section as a worthless site that Doc stole credit for from someone else) has been delayed because the Virgin Island's territorial archaeologist had to return to the States for personal business. Oh, we bet. Translation: Doc can no longer fund his junkets with credit cards. Remember, according to his filing, he only has $200 in the bank.

We are in the process of attempting to track down this archaeologist, by the way. We're interested in finding out if he's even heard of one Doc McManus, let alone a Spanish shipwreck. We'll keep you posted.

There's gold in them thar cards!

Ever notice Doc's ID tagline on HHI, Treasure is in books? We suggest an amended version that more accurately reflects his new "public standing":
Screw history & archaeology, treasure's in credit cards baby!
Yeah, we have some more.

Satdiver (aka "Smitty")
Current: In the face of stupidity, even the gods themselves are helpless....
Amended: When you're the face of stupidity, helplessly bleat on about buckets and portable generators....
Scribe
Current: We possess only the past
Amended: We poseurs possess nothing, really
Jesus of Lubby
Current: Better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian
Amended: Better not let a drunken Doc near your change jar, or a sober Doc either
Solomon
Current: Errare Humanum est perseverare diabolicum
Amended: EGO lenio itchy scrotums per meus fidus equus verbero (or: I mitigate itchy scrotums with my trusty horse whip to lash)
(Diabolical, that last one.)

Perhaps this is why the HHI brass suddenly wants to take their Odyssey "conversations" private? For fear of well-deserved ridicule?

You're welcome.

Karma is a Bitch

We've received emails from readers asking what can be done about questions regarding Doc's assets and his recent bankruptcy filing.

Let's be clear here: We've no way of knowing whether Doc has, or has not, hidden assets, but the recent discovery of a sail boat for sale raises questions. So, as part of our compact with you to be public servants for information, we're going to provide you with information about how to contact folks involved with Doc's bankruptcy proceedings.

We don't see anything wrong with notifying these people that there are questions that need to be asked. We especially think Doc's creditors might have a stake in this as well.

So, here you go:

The bankruptcy trustee can be located/contacted here.

A creditor with interest in Doc's filing can be contacted here.

You're welcome!

The Bitch is Back

We've reported several instances of "Solomon's" bitchiness toward his Twit Minor Doc before. And we recently wrote about how we found it interesting that Doc's HHI co-founder failed to give him the customary pat on the head for his "Spanish shipwreck" update. Well, we just found another direct backhand to Doc's puckered kisser, delivered with no small amount of snark.

Doc, who clearly is working overtime to try to sound relevant over at the HHI website, despite all his recent embarrassments, was attempting to pontificate about Viking history. Saying he wanted to "add" to the debate, he posted up a surprisingly pedantic comment about the Vikings in Irish history. This was met with this rather chilly response from Solomon:
"Doc: that statement you offered - from yourirish.com, by the way - is the standard, orthodox view of Vikings. " [Emphasis ours]
In other words, Doc is now not only a bankrupt libeler, but also a gratuitous plagiarizer.

Sure enough, we checked it out, and Doc lifted his Viking post, word for direct word, without any attribution whatsoever, from www.yourirish.com. He provided no source link, didn't put the comment in quotes, nothing. Doc obviously wanted people to think those words were his.

Now, is it just us, or should one expect a higher standard from a website that claims it's deeply committed to history and truth? We certainly think so, but apparently gross plagiarism is only slightly frowned upon (why, for example, wasn't the post fixed or removed?)

Yet another blow to HHI's "credibility" courtesy of co-founder "Doc" Jim McManus (not that we thought they had any to begin with, mind you).

Sailing into the sunset, or a cell?

One of our incredibly sharp readers found a most interesting item for sale posted by our favorite village idiot. Take a look at this:
'Sundowner' Iroquois Mark II am ketch #229. She is an factory original ketch rig - one of a kind as far as is known. New Honda 9.9 longshaft, new radio, depth sounder, new pressure water system, new batteries, new inverter, new lifelines, new trampoline, new Caribe dinghy with Yamaha 9.9, Auto-Helm auto pilot, new propane system and stove, rewired. Lying Lighthouse Point, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. $25,000.00. Contact Jim, email: nauticalresearch@yahoo.com
Gosh, this boat sure sounds lovely with all those fancy "new" items, no? Did Doc load up on all new equipment in advance of knowing he'd file for bankruptcy? Also, we think it interesting that this asset does not appear in Doc's bankruptcy filing. We therefore think the judge and creditors might be interested in the status of this lovely vessel.

We've emailed Doc with this information and told him we would give him an opportunity to respond to this before we do anything else with it. After all, it's a very serious crime to hide assets from a bankruptcy court and creditors. Especially when you're talking about $238,000 in liabilities.

Let's see what he says....

Derailing the Bartram

Well, after a long absence, we see the sniveling, whip-cracking prick known as "Solomon" has reemerged from his dank cave (but not before first gorging himself on bat guano, the secret to his 325 years of age), to postulate about Odyssey and the HMS Sussex. Today over on HHI he posted:
The whole [HMS Sussex] story is a crock.

So here we are, after many years and many millions of dollars, and now Odyssey has to admit that they still don't know what they have. No surprise there, then.

And the UK government? Is it still behind Odyssey? Well, they detained the Alert. One of its agents even came to me to ask what should be done - we have been in talks for quite a while. Yes, the government is behind Odyssey: perhaps they should watch their collective back.

A note: we know exactly what ship Odyssey has (and it isn't the Sussex). ~ Solomon
We know Bartram likes to muse about his whips, and the Sussex is a dead horse he can't stop flailing. We find it amusing that he repeatedly claims absolute certainty that the historical record is complete enough for him to rule with finality on the narrative of the doomed ship. As if he had open access to view Odyssey's own substantial research on the vessel (which, we'll kindly remind everyone convinced the UK government to enter into an exclusive partnership). From his tiny perch located square in the heart of Fatfuckingloserham, UK, he simply pronounces the Sussex history a "crock." Just like that kids, the story's over. Go on home, now.

He even claims to know the actual identity of the shipwreck Odyssey did find, and guess what? It ain't the Sussex! (Gosh, you'd think the media might be interested in that breaking news, eh? Maybe Bartram should call John Colapinto again to see if he can actually fleece a New Yorker writer twice?)

But, hey? Since when did inconvenient facts and the lack of convincing historical proof to back up such certainty ever stop the HHI nitwits from making definitive pronouncements about anything?

Note also the reemergence of another predictable Bartranism: that is, his less-than-subtle innuendo that he's "in the know" about Odyssey with super-secret sources; hell, he even claims these "sources" are consulting him about "what to do" with the Alert. Now ain't that something? He also apparently possesses enough information to level a threat at his own government regarding their ongoing relationship with Odyssey. Yowza.

We all know this sort of guy: In actual life, he's the one who has never done anything of merit, yet still demands respect and admiration for his now booze-saturated imaginary accomplishments. And when that doesn't work, he resorts to the "I know something very important, but I can't tell you because my sources only trust me with this information." In other words, you'll know more when he deems it necessary for you to know more, which will be never, because there's nothing there to know. (Got that?)

It's the equivalent of the first explorers flashing pretty (but worthless) trinkets to gain the attention and obedience of savages. Problem is, this trick is well out of fashion in the modern era (well, unless you're dealing with Doc and you show him some fancy plastic cards that magically deliver instant gratification).

Of course, we've seen this before with Bartram: he pulled the same pathetic trick when he claimed, also from an alleged secret "high-level" source, that mass arrests of Spanish Government officials were imminent for illegally consorting with Odyssey. Predictably, nothing ever materialized and old Stinky hopes ya'll forgot all about that one. Well, we didn't.

So, listen up, Solomon, HH Watch has put you on Super Secret Double Probation, and even though you don't know what that is, or what it means, you better watch yourself, 'cause something's gonna happen sucka. Because we know people. High-level people. And they know you. And they don't like you, or your kind. Ahhh, we're just pulling your chain, Johnny Boy! The reality is, no one likes you. So we're not going out on a limb on that one.

Finally, one side observation of interest: Bartram has yet to comment on his Cabin Boy's "update" on the supposed Spanish shipwreck find in the Caribbean. Which is odd, for if you read the entire thread on HHI, Solomon repeatedly pats Doc's head for "progress" on this undoubtedly ground-breaking shipwreck discovery. (Right.) This must be most troubling to Doc, especially since his other HHI mates are launching projects all over Europe. The poor fella is bearing quite the load at the moment, so to lose the patronizing nod of the Master? Oh Dearie! How much can a village idiot take?

We think it would be amusing to learn of Bartram's thoughts on those who claim bankruptcy. We don't think it's much of a stretch to imagine him saying that ruinous debt is the result of a weak mind, poor character, and an utter lack of self-control. The remedy? But of course: A well-deserved thrashing with Ye Old Horse Whip followed by some serious time for self-contemplation (not to mention healing) in a debtors prison.

Doc should be relieved he wasn't toiling for Master Bartram's estate a few hundred years ago, no?

Snorkeling Doc?

Well, as promised there's already some interesting developments in the Doc bankruptcy saga. One of our intrepid readers noticed that Doc posted this evening on the HHI website about his supposed "Spanish shipwreck" -- you know, the one that suddenly disappeared after Doc and Solomon made such a big deal about it back in April.

Here's the full text of Doc's HHI post from this evening:
Well Members,

At long last we are to make the next dive on the "unknown Spanish wreck" during the fourth week of this month. Charles, my dive partner and co-hort in this mission has arranged to have an archaeologist from the NPS join us as well as the archaeologist who is responsible for the Territory of the Virgin Islands. Hopefully we can come to some sort of conclusions about what has been found. More dredging has been scheduled in the big ship channel leading up to the harbor. This will surely destroy what we have found. I for one cannot understand why they need bigger cruise ships than they already have.

I am very grateful that my dive partner has put this together at last. Charles holds a graduate degree in maritime history from Texas A&M. In addition, Charles is a close friend of Dr Filipe de Castro and James Goold Esq and he is also on the lecture circuit. Dr de Castro was kind enough to arrange the Carbon 14 testing for our artifacts at Texas A&M.

It will be a stroke of luck if we can halt progress (?) and save the artifacts. I shall keep you appraised of progress.

Cheers, Doc
We're fairly certain Doc's creditors would be interested in how a man with over $238,000 in personal debt is funding these personal little expeditions? (And one wonders if this is why he credits his friend "Charles" for "putting it together"? Hmmmm?)

Perhaps even more interesting is Doc's name dropping of one James Goold, Esq, as being a close friend of his diving buddy. Is Doc pulling the six degrees of separation trick to connect himself to one of Odyssey's major opponents? We think so. First of all, why would any respectable person in this industry, and especially one involved in such a volatile case as the Black Swan, want to be within 100 yards of a loser like McManus?

We suspect Doc's merely once again exaggerating his involvement with and importance to this shipwreck"mission" -- if finding an anchor and some other junk can be called that. The reality is, we'd bet the house that HHI's many posts today about their various projects in Europe, and with his recent personally embarrassing bankruptcy announcement, this is Doc's pathetic attempt to still seem relevant among his poser buddies. (It will be interesting to see how Master Solomon responds: Enthusiasm? Or not at all?)

We suspect they know desperation when they read it, however, and undoubtedly had a good snicker at his expense. The poor Dearie! Stay tuned....

You like us, you really like us!

If you had told us last April that this website would have 10,000 hits by mid-September, we would have said: "Are you smoking some of that Doc Weed?" Followed by, "Hey, where can we get some?"

10,000 is a milestone, for sure. And while it's no 238,098, we like to think this proves the old adage that less can be more (with one notable exception...just ask Doc). We'd like to thank all our readers, writers, researchers, and those anonymous folks kind enough to support our humble efforts here. One thing for certain: We couldn't have done this without your help, suggestions and readership.

We remain committed to smacking down the small minds that are, for whatever reason, focused on tearing down a good company and investment we admire. No need to name names here, if you read this site, you know well enough who they are.

What are we most proud of?

In the old days, there was no way to critique or openly comment on the actions and words of the HHI posers. They certainly don't allow alternative viewpoints on their website, and are quick to delete posts that don't conform with their official line on any matter. So much for intellectual curiosity and honesty. For the longest time they were even able to control the content on Yahoo through manipulation of Yahoo's fairly non-judgmental TOS (they continue to do so, for the record). So we created this site for a very simple reason: To provide a forum that pointed that same harsh light they like to point at others directly at them. Predictably, the roaches scattered.

Finally, as a celebration of this admittedly minor moment (we'll break out the champagne at 500,000), we're pleased to resurrect HHI's initial response to our website. Ironically enough, we think this graphic ended up helping promote our site and even drove traffic to us. Not surprisingly, they quickly realized the unintended consequences and shut it down, but not before we got a snapshot of this:

Needless to say, looks like all us white trash got the last laugh. Hyuk hyuk.

Thanks again and stay tuned. As the BS case picks up, and news about Doc's libel case and bankruptcy filing gather steam (we think the latter is especially ripe for some juicy findings), we'll be doing some reporting and editorializing. As always, feel free to send us tips and/or ideas for our coverage and content. We fully welcome that.

Where's the Diver in the Doc?

Anyone else find it curious that a guy who refers to himself descriptively as "Diving Doc" (over on HHI), and who was recently bragging about finding his very own Spanish treasure ship on a personal dive, listed no diving equipment or related apparatuses as assets?

We know a lot of serious divers and they'd rather leap off a tall bridge than use rented equipment. So, it seems reasonable to conclude that either Doc is not as devoted a diver as he has claimed, or there's some funny business going on. Regardless, it doesn't appear he'll be diving again any time soon.

Hey, you think those two Casio watches listed are water proof?

P.S. And yes, this is a picture of "Diving Doc," taken directly from his HHI profile page. (We find the mass wreckage surrounding him an appropriate metaphor.)

Dressed to Shill

Can someone explain to us how a person can spend $100 a month on clothing but only end up with a wardrobe worth $300?

Is this the kind of financial savvy that makes Doc an economic genius? Does "clothing" really mean "booze"?

That's a lot of Vesper t-shirts, friends.
